In the previous part...
In the first article we showed why classic contact forms increasingly fail to meet the expectations of modern users. We also explained that the form is not an end in itself - it is only a tool to collect information needed to carry out a specific process.
Today we will go one step further.
We will show what Conversational UX and Agentic UX are and why these concepts may change the way websites, applications and business systems are designed in the coming years.
We will also return to our example online store SportZone to see what the first stage of the transition from a classic form to an intelligent customer service process looks like.
For years websites taught the user their language
For more than two decades most websites operated according to a similar pattern.
The user had to learn how to use the system.
They had to know:
- where to click,
- which menu to choose,
- what the correct category is called,
- what information to enter in the form,
- which fields are required.
In other words - the person adapted to the interface.
For years UX designers have tried to simplify this process by shortening forms, improving navigation and using more intuitive messages.
But the principle remained the same.
The user did all the work.
AI reverses this relationship
Modern language models are changing this relationship.
More and more often the system adapts to the user's way of communicating.
It doesn't require knowledge of the site's structure. It doesn't require choosing the right categories. It doesn't require knowing product or service names. You only need to describe your problem in your own words.
For example: "I'm looking for a lightweight bike for daily commuting to work. I ride mainly in the city, I'm about 180 cm tall and my budget is up to 5000 PLN."
A person does not wonder which form they should go to. They simply describe their need.
The system interprets the message and leads the further conversation.
What is Conversational UX?
Conversational UX (Conversational User Experience) is a way of designing interactions in which communication with the system resembles a natural conversation.
This does not mean merely adding a chat window to a website. It is a much broader concept. Its goal is to enable the user to achieve their goal through dialogue.
The system:
- understands context,
- analyzes previous answers,
- asks follow-up questions,
- adapts the conversation flow to the user's situation,
- helps make decisions.
The most important thing is that the user does not need to know the system structure. They can focus solely on their problem.
Chatbot vs Conversational Interface - they are not the same
This is one of the most common misunderstandings.
Many people equate a Conversational Interface with a chatbot. That's a big simplification.
Classic chatbots usually operated according to pre-prepared scripts.
Most often:
- they displayed a list of buttons,
- they guided the user along a pre-programmed path,
- they did not understand context,
- they could not answer questions outside the script.
A modern Conversational Interface using AI works completely differently.
It can:
- interpret natural language,
- conduct multi-threaded conversations,
- remember context,
- clarify ambiguities,
- adapt the communication style to the user.
It is not limited by a rigid decision tree.
What is Agentic UX?
If Conversational UX changes the way we communicate...
...then Agentic UX changes the way goals are achieved.
It is a relatively new approach to designing user experiences where AI is not only a conversational partner.
It becomes an active participant in the process. Its task is not just to answer questions. It is to help the user achieve the intended outcome.
This is a very important difference.
In classic UX the user performs most of the actions independently.
In Agentic UX part of the responsibility is taken over by an intelligent agent.
How does Agentic UX work?
Imagine a customer visiting the SportZone store. They don't know which bike will be right for them.
Instead of browsing hundreds of products, they start a conversation.
AI asks:
- What will the bike be used for?
- How often do you plan to ride?
- What is your budget?
- Do you prefer comfort or a sporty ride?
- Will you be carrying luggage?
Based on the answers the agent:
- eliminates unsuitable models,
- explains differences,
- suggests specific products,
- answers questions,
- compares variants.
The user does not have to know the store's offer. The system guides them through the whole process.
This is the essence of Agentic UX.
The agent does not replace the user
This distinction is very important.
A good AI agent does not make decisions for the customer. It does not impose a choice. It does not hide alternatives.
Its role is to:
- organize information,
- reduce the number of options,
- shorten search time,
- make it easier to make an informed decision.
The final choice still belongs to the user.
How is the SportZone store changing?
In the first part the customer saw a classic contact form. Now it is replaced by an intelligent assistant.
After entering the site a message appears: "Hi! I’d be happy to help you choose the right bike. Tell me what you're looking for."
The customer types one sentence.
They don't need to choose a category. They don't need to know models. They don't need to search the entire store.
The conversation proceeds naturally.
After a few questions the AI suggests three best-matching models with reasoning about why these products meet the customer's needs.
This is the first change.
In the next part we will see that the conversation does not end with a recommendation.
AI will also be able to:
- prepare data for CRM,
- qualify the lead,
- trigger the appropriate workflow,
- escalate the case to a salesperson or consultant.
Benefits of Conversational UX and Agentic UX
Well-designed solutions can bring many benefits.
For the user:
- shorter time to find the right product,
- more natural communication,
- fewer steps to complete,
- better matching of offers,
- greater sense of personalized approach.
For the company:
- higher conversion rate,
- better quality of acquired leads,
- fewer abandoned forms,
- automation of part of consultants' work,
- richer data about customer needs.
Limitations and challenges
Conversational UX is not a perfect solution.
A poorly designed system can:
- ask too many questions,
- misinterpret the user's intentions,
- lead to overly long conversations,
- provide imprecise answers,
- discourage further interaction.
Therefore, proper design of the entire process is crucial.
The goal is not for AI to talk as long as possible. The goal is to help the user achieve their objective as quickly as possible.
Glossary of terms
Conversational UX
An approach to designing user experiences in which interaction with the system occurs through natural text or voice conversation.
Conversational Interface
An interface that enables communication with the system in the form of dialogue, using natural language instead of traditional control elements.
Agentic UX
A concept of designing user experiences in which an intelligent agent actively helps the user achieve a goal by analyzing context, proposing next steps and supporting the decision-making process.
Conversation context
Information collected during interaction with the user that allows AI to conduct a coherent and logical conversation without repeatedly asking the same questions.
Summary
The development of artificial intelligence is not only about replacing forms with a conversation.
A much bigger change concerns the way the entire user experience is designed.
Conversational UX makes communication with the system more natural.
Agentic UX goes a step further - AI begins to actively help the user achieve their goal by guiding them through the stages of the process.
In the next part we will show how this approach translates into practical solutions. We will explain what dynamic forms, AI onboarding and intelligent lead qualification are, and we will also see how the SportZone store turns an ordinary contact form into a complete sales process supported by artificial intelligence.
